Second Annual Short Play Festival

This is The Actors Studio of Newburyports second annual nationwide short play festival. In response to our call for submissions, we received 253 scripts from 253 playwrights, hailing from 42 states, 3 Canadian provinces, and Ireland. After close and careful consideration, the list was trimmed down to 26 semi-finalists. All 26 plays were given a cold read in front of our panel of 12 judges and 30 voting audience members. By July we had chosen our eight short plays to be presented this fall at our black box theater. Eight directors signed up to mount the plays. We held open auditions and met or were reacquainted with 37 wonderfully talented actors. We are excited to be presenting these new pieces as they represent points of view and sensitivities from across the country. Five comedies, two hard-hitting dramas and a play thats so ethereal it defies description make up our fabulous program. These plays span the emotional spectrum, from side-splitting-hysterical to stunningly dramatic. We are very proud to once again showcase national playwrights and the amazing talent of our Newburyport directors and actors. Our winning playwrights are: Daniel Curzon, CA, "I and the Queen," winner of The Clopton Prize for Best Play Rich Orloff, NY, "The Unforgivable Sin of Forgiveness" Judith Strang, MA, "Reaping" Bruce Menin, MA, "Luminous" Maripat Allen, MI, "Stay" Tom Misuraca, CA, "True Colors" David Guaspari, NY, "Mortality Play" Bryan Harnetiaux, WA, "Meta"

Newburyport is on of the smallest cities in the state of Massachusetts, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful oceanside community!

The city has a strong tourist industry including a favorite destination for art lovers. Here you will find a most charming and large downtown area full of art galleries, specialty shops, historic B&B's, and terrific restaurants.

Newburyport is home to many large and gracious Federalist homes that were built by fortunes acquired by whaling and clipper ship owners living during the 19th century. Don't forget to visit Plum Island, an oceanfront wildlife refuge which also contains lovely beachfront and adorable summer homes and cottages.

Newburyport is very proud of its history and justifiably so, Newburyport staged the first tea party in opposition to England's tax on tea and it was well before the more famous one in Boston Mass. Newburyport is also proud to be the birth place of the United States Coast Guard since the first ship commissioned for the Coast guard was built here and named the frigate Massachusetts.

In the early 1960's, Newburyport used state and federal funds to launch a massive redevelopment scheme to reclaim its historic neighborhoods made of granite, cobblestones and to update their utilities such as water and sewer. At the same time in order to prepare for a profitable present and future, Newburyport built an industrial park which now houses many diversified small industries.

Many residents commute daily to Boston via Route 95 and on the commuter rail. Residents are proud of the fact that many families have lived in the city for generations, but they are just as proud of the fact that the city welcomes newcomers and the new ideas they bring. So come to Newburyport and experience the history, beauty and hospitality!
