Launch back to 1840

Join author Arthur L. Martin at the Historic Asa Waters Mansion in Millbury, Mass for a one of a kind event, officially launching his new novel! Local personality Chris Naff will emcee the evening and will host a question and answer with Mr. Martin after a reading from the novel. Mr. Martin will be signing copies of the book and taking photographs with guests. The evening will feature entertainment supplied by The Murphy Academy of Irish Dance and The Old Sturbridge Village Dancers. Tickets will be sold for general admssion as well as tickets that include a signed copy of the novel. Complimentary refreshments will be served. Beer and Wine will be available at an additional cost. About the Author- An avid enthusiast of living history, Art Martin has always been intrigued with roots: roots of religion, roots of family, and roots of life in America during the early 1800’s. It was with this intrigue of roots that he set out to write his first novel, “Summer of 1840,” a historical fiction based on a simple letter entitled “Happiness,” written by Lucinda Bixby on November 4th, 1840. He discovered the letter in a small leather chest, uncovered while he was restoring Lucinda’s house in Millbury, MA, the house that she grew up in. Art now lives with his wife Vicki in the neighboring town of Sutton, MA, in a house built by Amos Waters in 1816, meticulously restored by them over the past five years. Art has creatively weaved the history of these houses, and the towns where they are located, into his book. Art and Vicki have volunteered at Old Sturbridge Village for more than ten years where they presently interpret Early American Dance. As students of George Fogg, an expert in Early American Dance, Art and Vicki danced every Tuesday night for nearly five years at the Wayside Inn, previously known as The Red Horse Tavern, where the ghost of Jerusha Howe is alive and well. Art presently works at Clark University in Worcester as an advisor to small business owners and is an Adjunct Professor in the Graduate School of Management. Art is currently searching for the next intriguing artifact to wrap a tale around. About the Dancers- The OSV Dancers portray ‘experienced dancers’ from the town of Sturbridge in the early 1800’s. During that time, young people from the town would often attend a dance school taught by an itinerant dance master. It would be common for the dance master to expect the youth to learn some manners as well. Dancing was common during the period for both the young and adults, often taking place in common areas such as a barn or tavern. The festivities could last well into the early hours of the morning. All dances performed by the OSV Dancers are authentic to the period. The Murphy Academy is led by Bridget Murphy TCRG. Bridget, her sisters Elizabeth and Erin, and brothers Shane and Thomas were all pupils of the McInerney School where they learned the style and technique of Irish step dancing. As a family of five, they attended local feiseanna and competed in numerous regional, national, and world championships. The family is excited to continue to spread their love of Irish dancing through Central MA.
