Cranberry Coast Concerts presents Season 12 ~ Pianist Mark Solé-Lerís – Solo Piano Recital

Pianist Mark Solé-Lerís – Solo Piano Recital Mark Solé-Lerís enjoys an international career as a piano soloist and educator. Chairman of the Piano Department at the Monaco Conservatory of Music, Solé-Lerís has performed as a piano duo with Frédéric Chauvel for three decades. Solé-Lerís also performs with Chauvel, Kirk Whipple and Marilyn Morales in The United Nations Piano Quartet (The UNPQ). Last year, in Monaco and MA, The UNPQ gave the world premier performances and recordings of Symphony in C Major: Paths to Redemption by David A. Randall, arranged by Whipple. In his American concerts this summer, Solé-Lerís will perform a recital entitled “Romanticism in Music from the Middle Ages to Modern Times.” History books, specialists and musicologists tell us that Romanticism (also the Romantic era or the Romantic period) was an artistic, literary, musical and intellectual movement that originated in Europe towards the end of the 18th century and in most areas was at its peak in the approximate period from 1800 to 1850. Romanticism was characterized by its emphasis on emotion and individualism as well as glorification of all the past and nature. It originated in English, German and French literature in the late 18th century with writers such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Jean Paul, and the Vicomte de Chateaubriand and Mme de Staël. In music Romanticism started with the German Sturm und Drang (literally “storm and drive,” “storm and urge,” though conventionally translated as “storm and stress”) movement in which individual subjectivity and, in particular, extremes of emotion were given free expression in reaction to the earlier more “constrained” Baroque and Classical historical movements. The first officially romantic piece of music was written by Carl Maria Von Weber in his opera “Der Freischütz,” usually translated as “The Marksman” or “The Freeshooter.” The plot is based on the German folk legend of the Freischütz, where Max the hunter/hero makes a pact with the devil by making seven magic bullets which cannot miss their target in order to win the contest that will give him the hand of his beloved Agathe. Six will be for him, but the seventh for the devil. The story ends in a bloodbath. In his musical program, the message from Solé-Lerís is to show that all the ingredients from emphatic emotion to individualism – the subjective, the irrational, the imaginative, the personal, the spontaneous, the emotional, the visionary, and the transcendental. All are intrinsically part of human nature and have always existed. Therefore, romanticism in music can be found all the way back to the Middle Ages!
