In-season Monitoring and Plant Management for Growing Biological Systems

Description: Learn how to understand the health of your plants through observation and other monitoring methods. We will test Conductivity and Brix monitoring for activity during the season. The session will also look at using foliar sprays and nutrient drenches to keep plants healthy. Mattapan on Wheels 7th Annual Bike-a-thon

What:  A bike ride/tour of Mattapan and neighboring communities! On-Site Registration and Check-In Begins at 8 AM Bike Rides Begin at 9AM Date: Saturday, July 22, 2017 Rain Date:  Saturday, July 29, 2017 Cost:  FREE!  $5 Suggested Donation Age:  8+ (12 and under w/adult) The Mattapan Food and Fitness Coalition Vigorous Youth invites you to our 7th Mattapan on Wheels (MoW) Bike-a-thon! This year we will be biking on the newly completed Neponset Trail! During MoW, riders of all ages and skill levels come together, get physically active and work to make Mattapan a more bike-friendly neighborhood. After the ride, grab some food and join our partners at the 12th Annual Hoops and Scoops event! Fundraising MoW gets bigger each year. With more participants biking in the event, funds are needed to ensure that MoW is everything you want it to be. Consider making a donation to help us reach our goal of $5,000 to start planning for MoW 2018. Funds will also go to support our youth to attend the Youth Bike Summit in October. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated! *Donations to MFFC directly (through this registration page) are not tax deductible. B-3 Police city bikers will be there to help escort your ride leaders and participants. 2. All riders are required to wear a bike helmet.  No exceptions! Free helmets will be available.  $5 suggested donation 3. A bike safety demonstration will be presented before the ride.  4. Free bike loans will be available by Boston Bikes. Priority will be given to online registered riders.  Please bring your own bike to give others the opportunity to participate. *TO BORROW A BIKE AND/OR HELMET, YOU MUST PRESENT SOME FORM OF COLLATERAL (KEYS, ID, ETC.) THAT WILL BE RETURNED WHEN YOU TURN IN THE BIKE AND/OR HELMET. IF YOU ARE UNDER 18 YEARS OLD, YOU MUST FILL OUT A WAIVER FORM SIGNED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN! 5. Experienced bike riders have planned each of the routes and will be leading the rides.  Be aware that each of the routes requires some riding on streets in Mattapan; most do not have bike lanes!  Please respect the route leaders and follow their instructions.  First-time bike riders are encouraged to stay at the park and have fun!  6. If you have a medical condition, please check with your health care practitioner before riding. Route Description: Family Ride: 8 miles. Destination: Pope John Paul II Park, Dorchester This is a very green and scenic route. Participants on this ride will be able to ride the completed Neponset Trail starting in Mattapan.  Riders will continue on the trail ride too. The route is 90% flat with a small hill at Pope John Paul II Park and another hill on the return trip to Walker Playground as the road winds up Mamelon Circle and on Babson Street.  Intermediate Ride: 15 miles. Destination: Carson Beach, Dorchester This route provides an exciting combination of sightseeing and engaging biking.  Intermediate route riders will leave Walker Playground and bike on the Neponset River Greenway path, through Pope John Paul II Park. Riders will continue on the path to bike through UMASS Boston and the JFK Museum. The return to the Playground will take bikers on Neponset River Greenway path. This route is mostly flat, except when crossing Morrissey Boulevard to continue on the trail. There are hills on the return trip along Mamelon Circle and Babson Street. Expert Ride: 21 miles. Destination: Castle Island, South Boston (This ride for  17+ ONLY) This route is very scenic, with extensive views of the Neponset River and Dorchester Beaches. The expert route will take riders on the same path as the Family and Intermediate routes but is longer. This route is recommended for experienced riders ONLY.  Bike with Friends! Mattapan was attached to Boston as part of Dorchester in 1870. Mattapan is home to a mix of single home family houses as well as two and three family houses.
