Newburyport is also proud to be the birth place of the United States Coast Guard since the first ship commissioned for the Coast guard was built here and named the frigate Massachusetts.

In the early 1960's, Newburyport used state and federal funds to launch a massive redevelopment scheme to reclaim its historic neighborhoods made of granite, cobblestones and to update their utilities such as water and sewer. At the same time in order to prepare for a profitable present and future, Newburyport built an industrial park which now houses many diversified small industries.

Many residents commute daily to Boston via Route 95 and on the commuter rail. Residents are proud of the fact that many families have lived in the city for generations, but they are just as proud of the fact that the city welcomes newcomers and the new ideas they bring.
