Dean Stevens and Friends:Celebration of Dean's Sixth CD, "Arise!" w Ritt Henn, Rob Flax, Eric Kilburn, John and Rachel Nicholas, David Dodson
For decades, Dean Stevens has delighted audiences of all ages throughout Roslindale and the Americas. An exuberant performer of distinctive style and wit, he combines an intricate, self-taught guitar style with a versatile and expressive singing voice. He has established himself as a formidable creator and interpreter of a wide spectrum of songs in English and Spanish. His own material explores a variety of personal and social topics, paints sketches of people and places, celebrates the Earth, and annoys the narrow minded. Born and raised in Costa Rica, Dean Stevens is a lifelong student of Latin America. He learned Spanish at an early age, and readily absorbed the musical and topical influences of the region. He travels frequently to Central America, and has become known for his humanitarian efforts on behalf of refugees returning to their homes in El Salvador and Guatemala. Dean Stevens has six highly acclaimed recordings to his credit. His brand new release, "Arise!"" (Volcano Records), is a collection of songs in English and Spanish, with guest appearances by Ritt Henn, Kevin Barry, Cindy Kallet, Grey Larsen, Eric Kilburn, Randy Sabien, Rob Flax, David Dodson, and too many others to name here.... "Dean Stevens; remember that name; we'll be hearing a lot more from him. Deans Stevens will inspire you. Great voice!! ~~Pete Seeger * "Seeing and hearing Dean Stevens live on stage is proof that sanity, literacy, love, hope, and the forces of good are still alive and well and at work in the universe. Every song is offered with immediacy, humanity, and humor underscored by the most articulate and inspired guitar work you'll hear anywhere on the topical folk circuit. His powerful anthem to natural cycles, Salmon, and well-chosen covers, particularly David Dodson's brilliant indictment of our fossil fuel addiction, Gasoline, will convince you that you are in the presence of a thinking and compassionate master communicator at the peak of his powers. Losing your faith? Go to a Dean Stevens concert!" ~~ GeoffBartley * "Powerful...moving political performer" ~~ Boston Globe * "A performer with keen vision, tenacity and wisdom to inspire and to entertain" ~~ Dirty Linen * "Dean Stevens is a charming entertainer, a musician of great sensitivity and wit. His spirit of joy and sharing shines through his music." ~~Jerry Christen, New Song Coffeehouse * "Dean Stevens is such a consummate musician and singer, such an easy guy to be around that it's easy to forget what a great songwriter he is..a sunny guy with a wicked wit, a killer guitar player,a first quality player and a first quality human being." ~~Bob Franke

"King of Shadows"
King of Shadows

When well-intentioned grad student Jessica invites streetwise runaway Nihar into her home, she unwittingly stumbles into a strange, sordid fantasy that imperils her otherwise idyllic life. The fanciful tale he weaves unveils a debauched realm of exploitation and terror that threatens to unravel Jessica’s worldview, but is any of it true, or merely the delusions of a troubled young mind? Playwright Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, known to television audiences as the creative mind behind The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale, draws inspiration from A Midsummer Night’s Dream to conjure a world more strange than true; a distempered fairyland which seeps through the cracks of reality. “Everyone in King of Shadows is running from their past,” explains director Michael Hisamoto, “pasts which haunt them into making choices in an attempt to change the status quo. I see the people in my life making choices like this all the time: living in fear of the past, fear of failure, fear of loss, fear of being insignificant… The play ultimately becomes a story of how we can run towards a better future instead of away from a painful past.”
