Massachusetts is divided into 21 registry districts, each with an elected Register of Deeds.

Each registry records all documents about real estate ownership within its district. Registers assign a sequential identifying number (known as the book and page number) to each document, then scan it into the registry's computer system. You can view images from these scans online at your home or office.

Registries also microfilm all recorded documents, and many still produce paper record books with document images. In most cases, registers return original documents to the landowner.

To help customers find relevant documents, registries create a searchable index with property addresses and the names of all parties to each document.

For more information, contact your local Registry of Deeds.
